Expand Your Reach with Residential Mailing Lists
Quickly grow your local audience via direct mail with residential mailing lists.
Reach As Many Potential Customers as Possible via Expansive Direct Mail Campaigns
Did you know that 44% of consumers prefer direct mail as a channel of communication from brands they don’t have an established relationship with? Your potential customers are just waiting for you, and many of them will be receptive to a physical mailing that explains your products or services and emphasizes what sets your business apart.
With residential mailing lists, you can reach all of the individuals within a specified area of geography, making local outreach simple. Plus, residential mailing lists can qualify for significant postal discounts, enabling you to not only expand your reach but also save money while doing so.
All About Deep Sync’s Residential Mailing Lists
Residential mailing lists, also known as resident/occupant, res/occ, or saturation lists, are indexes of addresses within a certain mail delivery route. Deep Sync has been in the resident data space for more than 35 years. Our exclusive partnerships enable access to 164 million residents, meaning we have coverage on 96% of the nation’s addresses.
You can purchase resident data online or through our client support team by calling 800-732-3440.
Leverage Deep Sync's Resident Direct data to reach virtually every mailable residential address within a given geographical area. Our residential mailing lists include the following attributes:
- Route Saturation
- Residential Addresses
- Business Addresses
- Mapping
- Postal Presorts
- Enhanced Occupant Data
- Contact Names Where Available
We compile our residential mailing lists from sources like:
- USPS® Computerized Delivery Sequence (CDS) file. CDS is a postal product that USPS® customers may participate in if they have at least 90% of all delivery points within a specific ZIP code. Once certified, the USPS uses CDS to maintain the customer’s data by sending them bi-monthly or weekly updates. Deep Sync's residential mailing lists are CDS qualified; we receive updates weekly and apply them monthly.
- Consumer name overlay. We provide contact names where available for an additional fee. Consumer contact names are available for approximately 75% of residential addresses, enabling you to personalize your direct mail efforts and increase open rates.
- Carrier route-level aggregated demographic attributes. A variety of carrier-route level demographic attributes are available through Deep Sync to help marketers understand the makeup of specific carrier routes.
Our residential mailing lists are prepared using the alternative address method. With the alternative address method, mail pieces are addressed using “Current Resident” for residential addresses and “Current Occupant” for business addresses.
This type of addressing is considered to be in compliance with Move Update guidelines, a USPS requirement that ensures mailers update the addresses on their mailing lists every 95 days.
Deep Sync's Resident Direct utilizes an advanced geospatial mapping function called GEO-Direct. This technology features a custom polygon tool that enables you to map out your target area and gain access to accurate addresses, demographics, mail carrier routes, and other important information.
All Deep Sync Resident Direct mailings must be completed within 90 days of purchase and can be mailed a maximum of four times within that same timeframe. Mailers are charged per mailing and do not receive a discount for mailing the list more than once.
We deliver each list with a CASS™ (Coding Accuracy Support System) certificate, which confirms that the addresses have been standardized to meet USPS requirements. The CASS certificate is an essential requirement for mailers seeking postal discounts and is only valid for 90 days. CASS certification ensures that:
- All addresses align with the USPS preferred format.
- All address abbreviations are correct.
- Any erroneous or missing ZIP Codes, ZIP+4 Codes, or carrier routes have been resolved.
When to Use Residential Mailing Lists
There are so many different kinds of direct mail lists. How do you know if residential mailing lists are right for you?
You may consider leveraging residential mailing lists over other list types if:
- You want to saturate a geographic area by mailing to every available address. Residential mailing lists enable you to reach every mailable residential address within a given geographical area, making them ideal for more general local campaigns.
- You seek the highest possible postage discounts for sortation and saturation. Residential mailing lists can qualify for significant postal discounts. When prepared correctly and delivered using USPS Marketing Mail®, residential mailings offer significant postal discounts compared to First-Class Mail®.
- The importance of postal discounts outweighs the importance of targeting specific consumers. If it’s more beneficial for your current campaign to save on costs than target specific consumers, you’ll want to leverage residential mailing lists.
- The importance of the highest possible deliverability outweighs the slightly lower deliverability of a more targeted list. Our residential mailing lists have a deliverability rate of 97-100%. Since we address mailings to “Current Resident” and “Current Occupant” and build our lists from the USPS Computerized Delivery Sequence (CDS) file, the USPS is required to deliver it to the associated mailbox as long as someone lives there.
- You want a list that arrives pre-sorted and ready for mailing, including appropriate postal paperwork. Deep Sync Resident Direct lists are delivered ready for mailing in walk sequence order. Mailers can then group the mailing by geographical region, bundle the mail in trays, and when the proper postal documentation is presented at the post office, receive significant discounts on their commercial mailing.
Example Residential Mailing List Use Cases
A local pizzeria may send a coupon mailing to every address in the neighborhood to increase sales.
A new lawn care service company may send mailings to every household within a five-mile radius to raise brand awareness.
A local urgent care center may send a mailing to every household within three miles to alert them that flu shots are now available.
A gym launching a new luxury membership may send promotional mailings to specific high-end neighborhoods or apartment complexes.
Residential Mailing List FAQs
What’s the difference between a residential mailing list and a consumer list?
While residential mailing lists only contain physical addresses, consumer lists are linked to individuals. They include consumers’ full names and home addresses, enabling greater personalization and narrower targeting.
Additionally, you may be able to filter consumer lists for specific characteristics. For example, you can tailor Deep Sync’s consumer lists based on criteria like buying activities, demographics, financial data, and lifestyle/interests.
Residential mailing lists come from USPS data, but providers typically compile consumer mailing lists from various sources, such as address histories, consumer surveys, and purchase transactions.
What are the benefits of using residential mailing lists?
The benefits of using residential mailing lists include:
- Expansive reach
- High deliverability
- Lower data costs
Is it legal to purchase residential mailing lists?
Yes, it is completely safe and legal for businesses to purchase residential mailing lists. However, you must complete your mailings within 90 days of receiving your list.
Data providers should follow all guidelines set by the Association of National Advertisers and any relevant local regulations. Deep Sync meets, if not exceeds, all applicable consumer privacy requirements.
How can you ensure the resident data you provide is accurate?
Resident data comes primarily from the USPS® Computerized Delivery Sequence (CDS) file, which is compiled and updated by postal carriers and maintained by the national Address Management System (AMS) office.
How often is your residential mailing list data updated?
Deep Sync receives updates from the USPS every week and applies them monthly.
